Partly because it links to a great interview with Stevan Allred, the author of A Simplified Map of the Real World, and partly because I love the questions .
Some of which I am going to swipe to interview myself about my story Stevie One.
Summarize your book in ten words or less:
A teenage runaway finds her selves.
If this book were the lovechild of two others, who are its parents?
Dhalgren, by Samuel R. Delany, and The Benson Murder Case, by S. S. van Dyne.
What ingredients go into the recipe of your writing style?
This came to me mostly in terms of clothing and accessories.
- A carefully folded display handkerchief
- A lawyer’s dark blue pantsuit
- A box of Balkan Sobranie cigarettes
- An army surplus cartridge belt, spray-painted black
- A fluffy pink bathrobe
- A cover story, never used
- A very sheer nightgown, in white
- A sweater, buttoned up to the top to hide a badly ripped blouse
- A bottle of rather unfortunate aftershave
- An unexpected, and very gentle, embrace
- A pair of large, horn-rimmed glasses
Season with jealousy, envy, enthusiasm, confusion arrogance, and derring-do.
And, to drink:
- A can of beer, in the wrong place
- Two glasses of very good sherry
- And an ample supply of good coffee
The meal must be prepared in a kitchen with no computers, cell phones, e-readers, or tablets. Preferably no landline phones, and possibly no electricity.
