the origin of the coat

We found Christy out in the hallway, standing by the nearest of the three phone booths. She was dressed as usual, in a black leather jacket, a T-shirt, and a black skirt. Her red hair was tied back, and her face was pale and tense.

She was holding a man by the scruff of the neck. He was called Sparky, and he was a local character. "He was trying to listen at the door," she said. "I know you were in there with the family, so I held him out here."

"Thank you, Christy," my employer said. "Sparky, how are you?"

"Oh, just fine, ma'am." He didn't sound convincing.
