As I reported before<\/a>, my current story has shifted a bit, and it appears that a different person is going to be solving the mystery than I had expected.<\/p>\n

But then, writing things in that direction, I came up against a problem. She doesn’t have Watson. So, that means rather than having her talking over the case with someone else, I just have her thinking about the case.<\/p>\n

Which is already getting tedious. As Alice said, “What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?”<\/p>\n

Unless you go to first person narration, there’s a reason a lot of detectives have partners of some sort. And this character does have people she usually talks to about what she’s doing, but for various reasons they are not available to her on this case.<\/p>\n

But then, thinking back, I realized that I had planted something last year (or was it two years ago?) that could get her somebody to talk to. <\/p>\n

I do that a lot, as I talked about here<\/a>. In the commentary track for “Serenity” (the pilot episode for Firefly<\/em>, not the movie), Joss Whedon says that he often does it as well – plants things that he thinks he may want later, sometimes without any idea at the time of what he may want them for.<\/p>\n

I envy people who know in advance what they’re doing and why, but I certainly don’t.<\/p>\n

And I’ll bet that some of them are winging it just as much as I am, but they’re saying afterwards, “Oh, yes, I knew all along why I did that.” \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
