{"id":475,"date":"2009-11-22T22:00:40","date_gmt":"2009-11-23T02:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/u-town.com\/collins\/?p=475"},"modified":"2015-02-03T08:25:35","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T12:25:35","slug":"they-draw-your-eyes-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u-town.com\/collins\/?p=475","title":{"rendered":"they draw your eyes up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><I>(I wrote this back in 2005, and I'm posting it now because of the death of <A HREF=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christo\" target=\"_blank\">Jeanne-Claude<\/A>.)<\/I><\/p>\n<p>They draw your eyes up<\/p>\n<p>Walking through <a href=\"http:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Gates\" target=\"_blank\">the Gates<\/a> in Central Park at dusk was a wonderful experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Gates are participatory.  I felt like the only person in the whole park who was neither posing nor being snapped while posing.<\/p>\n<p>There are paths in the park with no gates, though, and it was while walking along one of these that l realized how much I was looking around, how much of the park I was noticing.<\/p>\n<p>Because that's what they do.  They draw your eyes up, no small feat in a city where we all look at the pavement all the time.<\/p>\n<p>And the gates were always still visible in the distance, like the high, ghostly banners the elves carry in Lord of the Rings.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that's why they had to be in New York. And maybe that's why they're only up for sixteen days.
