------------------- (1) SOS is Peterson's Sexual Orientation Scale, an attempt to quantify a person's sexual preference. Originally it was a scale from -5 (absolute preference for same-sex relationships) to +5 (absolute preference for opposite-sex relationships). However, he decided that this had two drawbacks. One was that it could be construed as indicating that homo- sexuality has a negative connotation. The other was that it allowed the existence of a "0" value (meaning that there was no preference at all), and Mr. Peterson does not believe that this is possible. Therefore, he created 2 scales: 1 - 5 (5 meaning absolute preference for opposite-sex relationships) and A - E (with E meaning absolute preference for same-sex relationships). Therefore, "A" means a slight preference for same-sex, and "1" means a slight preference for opposite-sex, and there is no "0" value. The parameters used to generate this value are not known. Apparently there is a quasi-scientific formula used, which requires fairly specific information about the person. This is why most of the people listed in the notebooks don't have a SOS rating as yet. return to Pete's notes back to the chapter
