the letter S

My friend Cyndi gave these instructions: This is how it works: Comment on this entry and get a letter (if you're up to playing). Write ten words beginning with that letter, including an explanation of what the word means to you and why. And she gave me the letter S.

sharp cheddar cheese: Which I'm eating right now.

Selene: 600 years old, a vampire, good with weapons, played by Kate Beckinsale, go see the Underworld movies.

starling: mid-40s, good with weapons, could be played by Kate Beckinsale (if she can ditch the accent).

Slartibartfast: planet designer, good with fjords, played by the great Bill Nighy (who also played Viktor in the Underworld movies) who has my favorite line in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy:

Slartibartfast: Perhaps I'm old and tired, but I think that the chances of finding out what's actually going on are so absurdly remote that the only thing to do is to say, "Hang the sense of it," and keep yourself busy. I'd much rather be happy than right any day.
Arthur Dent: And are you?
Slartibartfast: Ah, no.
[laughs, snorts]
Slartibartfast: Well, that's where it all falls down, of course.

Sam: One of my characters. Cyndi also has a character named Sam. This gets confusing sometimes, as when she said, "Sam has a sister with two kids," and I said, "No he doesn't, his only sister is a teenage lesbian who doesn't have any kids." Different Sam.

Sex: One of the themes of my new novel. Even I'm surprised by how much sex my characters are having. Gay sex, incest, voyeurism, bestiality, threesomes. Wow.

September 11: One of the themes of my new novel (also the subject of some movies which I won't go see).

State Power: Who has it, and how they use it (one of the themes of my new novel).

Saturday: Today, which happens to be Uma Thurman's birthday. Say Happy Birthday to Beatrix, everybody! Can't wait for the movie where a guy breaks up with his girlfriend (Thurman) only to find out that she's a superhero, and she's really rather pissed off that he broke up with her. Me, I hate it when that happens.

SarahBeth: One of my characters (one of my favorites, I admit). She's a pain in the ass, but you can't really hate her, because she's having such a great time being a pain in the ass. Increasingly based on someone I knew a long time ago, who was indeed a pain in the ass, and who enjoyed every minute of it.
